Position Purpose/Function:


Under the direction of the Director of Building Facilities the HVAC/R Technician is responsible for corrective maintenance, new and renovated installations, and preventive maintenance of all building systems. Assist all trades within the Facilities Department to provide quality and time efficient corrective/preventive maintenance, projects and repairs in an orderly fashion to benefit Woburn Public Schools.


Supervision Exercised:


Incumbent will provide guidance or supervision to other workers, direct and/or supervise outside contractors as assigned and as needed.

 

Supervision Received:


Works under the direction and guidance of the Director of Building Facilities. The incumbent works under limited supervision and is expected to exercise initiative in anticipating maintenance issues and problems and must have the ability to set priorities that will confront Woburn Public Schools.

 

Responsibilities & Duties:

  • When emergency situations occur the HVAC/R Technician will need to respond when called upon.
  • Performs corrective action and preventive maintenance regarding all building systems.
  • Troubleshoot heating. ventilation and air conditioning, and refrigeration systems and perform corrective maintenance in a timely fashion.
  • Expertise with electrical circuits, distribution, transformers, fuses, motors, relays, magnetic starters, switches that operate at low and high voltage.
  • Proficient in perfom1ing tasks associated with a Direct Digital Control Energy Management System, i.e. setbacks, control, trending, overrides, troubleshooting. scheduling, replacements of parts, etc.
  • Ensures compliance with all applicable safety regulations, building codes and safety requirements.
  • Proficient in the use of Computerized Maintenance management Systems and will be responsible for the record keeping on all filter changes and equipment maintenance.
  • Assists in the development of the building preventive maintenance plan and the ongoing updating and implementation of planned preventive maintenance.
  • Assists the Director of Building Facilities regarding reviews of construction documents for both new construction and renovation projects.
  • Performs brazing, soldering, pipefitting, welding, fabrication of equipment and parts as needed.
  • Identifies and corrects health and safety issues in a time efficient manner.
  • Other duties and responsibilities as assigned i.e. grounds, snow removal.

Minimum Qualifications/Requirements:

  • H.S. diploma or equivalent
  • Five (5) years of experience in the heating, ventilation & air conditioning, refrigeration trade.
  • Possess a Valid State Drivers License required.
  • Possess a Valid Journeyman’s Massachuset1s Heating, Ventilation & Air Conditioning License.
  • Masters License preferred.
  • Preference will be giving to a candidate possessing a Massachusetts Journeyman's Electrical /Journeyman's or Plumber's license.
  • Knowledge and ability to demonstrate techniques of using maintenance tools, repairing machinery and providing preventive maintenance.
  • Ability to work effectively in a busy environment.
  • Good oral and written communications skills.

Compensation & Benefits:

  • As per the bargaining agreement.

Requirements and Job Environment:

  • The work is mutually mental and physical requiring an intellectual nature.
  • While performing the functions of this job, the incumbent is required to stand, walk, sit, bend, stoop, twist, talk and hear for extended periods. Frequently required use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools, or controls; reaches with hands and anns, crawls and climbs (ladders and lifts). Specific vision abilities required include close and medium distance vision and the ability to adjust focus.
  • Incumbent must be able to hear normal sounds, distinguish sound as voice and communicate through human speech. Work environment will be moderately noisy and at times very loud due to work areas such as boiler and mechanical rooms.
  • The incumbent is required to lift and carry equipment and supplies weighing up to 50 pounds.
  • This position requires the ability to operate a keyboard and calculator at efficient speed.
  • Work is performed both inside and outside and the incumbent may be exposed to extremes of heat and cold temperatures and inclement weather.
  • Incumbent is required to traverse uneven terrain and is subject to one or more hazards such as those associated with working near heavy equipment, mechanical and electrical systems.
