Woburn Public Schools is currently recruiting for a Teacher of the visually impaired to work with students with visual disabilities, providing augmentative services across our schools. The TVI is responsible for organizing and implementing an instructional program for visually impaired students and meeting the duties of teaching as outlined in the governing laws and policies. 

 

Responsibilities:

  1. Designing the student education program so that it is consistent with the total educational philosophy of the district. 
  2. Continuing professional growth through educational meetings, visiting related facilities, reading professional literature, and exchanging ideas among the district staff. 
  3. Working in coordination with other teachers in planning and developing the program.  

Programming

  1. Preparing, implementing, and evaluating an annual educational plan for each student based on individually assessed needs in accordance with district procedures. 
  2. Using appropriate assessment instruments pertinent to instructional areas. 
  3. Preparing lesson plans for each student. 
  4. Providing appropriate schedules for students involving school personnel as required. 
  5. Seeking a variety of services through community resources and agencies to meet the needs of exceptional students.
  6. Providing specialized instructional techniques and media through individual and/or group sessions designed to meet the educational, social and emotional needs of the students. 
  7. Participating in the in-school staffing and screening processes as appropriate. 
  8. Participating on evaluation teams for visually impaired students as appropriate.
  9. Making available to teachers instructional ideas and materials that are appropriate for the student within the classroom situation as requested.  

Collaboration/Communication of Program

  1. Cooperating with school personnel in coordinating services within the school. 
  2. Conferring with the classroom teacher as requested concerning any educational needs of the student.
  3. Developing and conducting an inservice program to inform classroom teachers of the goals and objectives of the  program and ways of achieving them in the school setting.
  4. Assist in providing information to community groups and parents concerning  programs as requested. 
  5. Assist in coordinating and providing news releases through the immediate supervisor for local news media as requested. 

 Reporting

  1. Ensuring that each student in the program has necessary evaluation records in their permanent folder. 
  2. Furnishing the principal with current student schedules. 
  3. Completing progress reports on each student in the program. 
  4. Supplying progress reports to school personnel as well as parents of students as necessary and as requested.
  5. Completing reports for appropriate local, state, federal and educational agencies. 
  6. Referring students who require further evaluation or follow-up services to the appropriate school personnel or community agencies.
  7. Any other responsibilities as directed by Administration.

Qualifications:

  • Must possess a current, active MA DESE License in Special Education
  • Demonstrated proficiency as a Teacher of the visually impaired
  • Demonstrated competence with leading edge assistive technology and delivering augmentative services
  • Experience working in a diverse educational setting, including the ability to work successfully with students, colleagues, and families from diverse ethnic, cultural, and socio-economic backgrounds.
